Academic Credit Systems in China

Although most Chinese institutions of higher learning operate on a semester-based system of credit, the specific value and distribution of credit totals may vary from program to program, and from institution to institution.

Chengdu University of Technology (2006 regulations):

  • 3-year zhuanke* programs: 130-150 credits
  • 4-year benke** programs: 170-190 credits
  • 5-year benke programs: 210-230 credits

Northeast Normal University (2006 regulations):

  • 4- year benke programs: 160 credits

Liaoning Normal University (2007 regulations):

  • 4-year benke programs: 170 credits

Tsinghua University (2011 information):

  • 4-year benke programs: 170 credits
  • 5-year benke programs: 190 credits

Wuhan University (2011 information):

  • 4-year benke programs: 140 credits (Arts and Humanities)
  • 4-year benke programs: 150 credits (Sciences and Medicine)
  • 5-year benke programs: 180 credits

Jinan University (2011 information):

  • 4-year benke programs:
    • 140 credits (International School - Finance major)
    • 160 credits (Shenzhen Tourism College) Translation College
    • 160 credits (Translation College)
    • 160 credits (Economics College)

Zhejiang Agricultural and Forestry University (2005 regulations):

  • 4-year benke programs:
    • 160 credits (Humanities)
    • 160-165 (Sciences)

Note: Situation and Policy, Military Training and Social Practice are not included into the required credit total, but rather are required for graduation.

Dongbei University of Finance and Economics (2007 regulations):

  • 4-year benke programs:
    • 159 credits (Accounting)
    • 164 credits (International Accounting)
    • 152 credits (Information Management and Information Systems)
    • 150 credits (Business Management from Surrey International Institute)

Hunan Agricultural University (2011 information):

  • 4-year benke programs:
    • 164 credits (Accounting)
    • 166.5 credits (Marketing)
    • 168 credits (Economics, Finance)
    • 169 credits (Business Administration)
    • 169 credits (International Economics and Trade)
    • 170 credits (Agricultural and Forestry Economics and Management)

Zhejiang Gongshang University (2011 information):

  • 4-year benke programs: 155 credits minimum
    • 160-161 credits (Finance, Insurance. Investment)

Shanghai Jiao Tong University (2012 information):

  • 4-year benke programs: over 200 credits (with high amount of credit for practical component)
  • 5-year benke programs: 230 credits (with high amount of credit for practical component)
  • 4-year benke programs: 145 (Engineering and Architecture)
  • 5-year benke programs: 180 (Engineering and Architecture)
  • 4-year benke programs: 171 credits (Economics)

Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (2007 regulations):

  • 4-year benke programs: approximately 172 credits
    • 188 credits (Finance)

 

* Zhuanke programs normally require two to three years of full time study leading to the award of a Graduation Certificate specifying the area of specialization. Graduates of zhuanke programs are eligible for admission into the third year of a benke program in a relevant field.

** Benke programs normally require four to five years of full time study leading to the award of a Graduation Certificate along with the award of a Bachelor Degree as long as all the degree requirements are met.
