China: 13 independent colleges upgraded to higher education institutions

The Department of Development Planning of China’s Ministry of Education recently approved 13 independent colleges to be upgraded to undergraduate-level higher education institutions. Among the 13 independent colleges, 6 were merged with vocational colleges and upgraded to vocational universities.

Independent colleges refer to private-run colleges affiliated with regular degree-granting higher education institutions (institutions that provide education at the undergraduate level and above). As of 2019, there were a total of 257 independent colleges in China.

Below is the list of the 13 independent colleges and their new names after the upgrade. Please note that the English institution names after upgrade are literal translations of the official Chinese institution names. Official English institution names are not available as of this date and could differ from the translations provided.

  1. 北京工商大学嘉华学院 (Canvard College, Beijing Technology and Business University) upgraded and renamed 北京金融科技学院 (Beijing College of Finance and Technology)
  2. 吉首大学张家界学院 (Jishou University Zhangjiajie College) upgraded and renamed 张家界学院 (Zhangjiajie College)
  3. 安徽大学江淮学院 (Jianghuai College, Anhui University) upgraded and renamed 合肥理工学院 (Hefei Institute of Technology)
  4. 阜阳师范大学信息工程学院 (College of Information Engineering, Fuyang Normal University) upgraded and renamed 阜阳理工学院 (Fuyang Institute of Technology)
  5. 安徽师范大学皖江学院 (Wanjiang College of Anhui Normal University) upgraded and renamed 芜湖学院 (Wuhu College)
  6. 云南艺术学院文华学院 (Yunnan Arts University Wenhua School) upgraded and renamed 昆明传媒学院 (Kunming College of Media and Communications)
  7. 四川外国语大学成都学院 (Chengdu Institute of Sichuan International Studies University) upgraded and renamed 成都外国语学院 (Chengdu College of Foreign Languages)
  8. 南京师范大学中北学院 (Nanjing Normal University Zhongbei College) merged with 江苏经贸职业技术学院 (Jiangsu Vocational Institute of Commerce) and renamed 南京经贸职业技术大学 (Nanjing Vocational University of Commerce)
  9. 江苏大学京江学院 (Jiangsu University Jingjiang College) merged with 江苏农林职业技术学院 (Jiangsu Vocational College of Agriculture and Forestry) and renamed 江苏农林职业技术大学 (Jiangsu Vocational University of Agriculture and Forestry)
  10. 南京师范大学泰州学院 (Nanjing Normal University Taizhou College) merged with 江苏农林职业技术学院 (Jiangsu Vocational College of Agriculture and Forestry) and renamed 江苏农林职业技术大学 (Jiangsu Vocational University of Agriculture and Forestry)
  11. 南京中医药大学翰林学院 (Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine Hanlin College) merged with 江苏医药职业学院 (Jiangsu Vocational College of Medicine) and renamed 江苏医科职业技术大学 (Jiangsu Vocational University of Medicine)
  12. 南通大学杏林学院 (Nantong University Xinglin College) merged with 江苏工程职业技术学院 (Jiangsu College of Engineering and Technology) and renamed 江苏工程职业技术大学 (Jiangsu Vocational University of Engineering and Technology)
  13. 山东财经大学燕山学院 (Yanshan College, Shandong University of Finance and Economics) merged with 山东职业学院(Shandong Polytechnic) and renamed 山东职业技术大学 (Shandong Vocational University)
