In an effort to streamline the supervision and operations of Swedish higher education, the three existing government authorities: the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education (Högskoleverket), The International Program Office for Education and Training (Internationella programkontoret) and The Swedish Agency for Higher Education Services (Verket för högskoleservice) were restructured on 31 December 2012 into two new government authorities which were scheduled to begin their operations on 1 January 2013:
