New Government Rules for International Students in the UK

The Home Office has made significant changes to the rules pertaining to international students in the United Kingdom. Some of the major changes include:

  • scrapping the two-year post-study work visa in 2012 for students of further education colleges
  • adding the National Health Service charge for hospital treatment
  • requiring students to show they can support themselves financially for up to nine months upon arrival
  • requiring students (except doctoral students) to move up a level on the National Qualifications Framework in order to extend their visa
  • imposing new salary requirements for work-visa international employees
  • restricting the right to work for international student spouses or dependants
