Private Higher Education Institutions in Zambia under New Regulations

Since 1999, Zambian higher education law has permitted the creation of private universities. These new institutions were required to be registered with the Ministry of Education. Since 2013 the Higher Education Authority is the new body providing oversight of higher education. Beginning with April 1, 2015, new private higher education institutions must apply to HEA for registration. If such registration is granted, its validity will be indefinite. The same procedure applies to foreign universities seeking to register in Zambia.

The HEA has also introduced a new "Accreditation of Learning Programmes" process. Private institutions seeking accreditation of their learning programs are to submit a formal application to HEA.
