Over the last decade, Kalinga University (located in Chhattisgarh) has undergone a number of status changes that can be summarized as follows:
- 2003 - 2005 - The original KU at Raipur was established and functioned for a limited period of time. Later legislation* canceled its recognition retroactively.
- 2005 - 2011 - KU did not exist.
- 2011 - Present - New KU was established at New Raipur, presumably followed by other branch locations. It is recognized under new legislation*.
* Any prior period of recognition by State law was anulled by the Supreme Court of India. Not only were the universities closed, but the law that initially gave them degree granting authority was overturned. New legislation established new KU on 24 March 2011. The new university is therefore found on the list of universities published by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
