Indian "Deemed-to-be-University" institutions asked to stop using "University" in their names

University Grants Commission (UGC) sent an official notice to institutions deemed as universities in November 2017. The notice requested that the said institutions stop using the word "university" directly in their names, as per apex court decision.

UGC [Institutions Deemed to be Universities] Regulation, 2016 specifies that "An Institution deemed to be University shall not use the word ‘University’ suffixed to its name but may mention the words “deemed to be university” within parenthesis suffixed thereto."

While the notice affects a number of institutions who are currently using the word "university" in their names, many remain unaffected as they have not been using that term in their institutional nomenclature.
