Universidad del Mar was given general institutional level recognition as a university in 1990. Additionally, the university gained accreditation by the Comisión Nacional de Acreditación (CNA) between 2010 and 2012. In 2012, the university lost the CNA accreditation due to evidence of financial mismanagement of the school, and evidence of bribery to gain their short-lived CNA accreditation. Sometime in late 2012 or early 2013, the institution lost the ministerial recognition as well. The February 2013 Ministry listing of higher education institutions in Chile includes the institution while the same list published in March of the same year does not.
Initially, the university was to close shortly after 2012. However, in line with the Right to Education laws which are to protect the already enrolled students, the Ministry extended the closure of the university to 2018 due to ongoing challenges in relocating its students to other institutions.
