Additional Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) given degree-granting authority

In 2016, the Parliament of India passed an act conferring degree-granting authority on seven additional Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs);

  • Indian Institute of Technology, Tirupati
  • Indian Institute of Technology, Palakkad
  • Indian Institute of Technology, Goa
  • Indian Institute of Technology, Dharwad
  • Indian Institute of Technology, Bhilai
  • Indian Institute of Technology, Jammu
  • Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad

The original Institutes of Technology Act was passed in 1961, establishing IITs as Institutions of National Importance with degree-granting authority.

Several subsequent amendments to this act have continued to add more IITs to the original four. The Ministry of Education of India currently lists 23 recognized IITs.
