In 2016, the Parliament of India passed an act conferring degree-granting authority on seven additional Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs);
- Indian Institute of Technology, Tirupati
- Indian Institute of Technology, Palakkad
- Indian Institute of Technology, Goa
- Indian Institute of Technology, Dharwad
- Indian Institute of Technology, Bhilai
- Indian Institute of Technology, Jammu
- Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad
The original Institutes of Technology Act was passed in 1961, establishing IITs as Institutions of National Importance with degree-granting authority.
Several subsequent amendments to this act have continued to add more IITs to the original four. The Ministry of Education of India currently lists 23 recognized IITs.
