Universiteti Aleksander Moisiu i Durresit (Aleksander Moisiu University of Durres), a public institution in Durres, was established in 2006.

Universiteti POLISShkolla Nderkombetare e Arkitektures dhe Politikave te Zhvillimit Urban (POLIS University International School of Architecture and Policies of Urban Development), a private institution in Tirane, was established in 2006.


Escola Superior Agraria do Kuanza-Sul (Agrarian Higher School of Kuanza-Sul), a public institution in Sumbe, Kuanz-Sul, was established in 2007.

Instituto Superior Privado de Angola (Higher Private Institute of Angola), a private institution in Luanda established in 2000, was renamed Universidade Privada de Angola (Private University of Angola) in 2007.

Instituto Superior Tecnico de Angola (Higher Technical Institute of Angola), a public institution in Luanda, was established in 2007.

Universidade de Belas (University of Belas), a private institution in Luanda, was established in 2007.

Universidade Metodista de Angola (Methodist University of Angola), a private institution in Luanda, was established in 2007.

Universidade Oscar Ribas (Oscar Ribas University), a private institution in Luanda, was established in 2007.

Universidade Tecnica de Angola (Technical University of Angola), a private institution in Luanda, was established in 2007.


Simon Fraser University added the grade of FD (failure with academic dishonesty) to its grading scale in May 2009. This grade will remain on a student's record during enrollment at the University and for two years after graduation.

University of Alberta uses the grades of F8 and F9 for failure with academic dishonesty. These grades remain on a student's record for three years, after which they are converted to an F.


Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, a public institution established in Granville Island, Vancouver in 1925, was renamed Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 2008.

Fraser Valley College, a public institution established in Abbotsford, British Columbia in 1974, was renamed University College of the Fraser Valley in 1989 and University of the Fraser Valley in 2008.

Kwantlen College, a public institution established in Surrey, British Columbia in 1981, was renamed Kwantlen University College in 1989 and Kwantlen Polytechnic University in 2008. It has branches in Langley and Richmond.

Malaspina College, a public institution established in Nanaimo, British Columbia in 1969, was renamed Malaspina University College in 1989 and Vancouver Island University in 2008.


Kafr El-Sheikh University, a public institution in Kafr El-Sheikh, was established in 2006 via expansion of a branch of Tanta University.


Yrkeshogskolan Novia (Vocational Higher School Novia) [also translated as Novia University of Applied Sciences], a public institution in Vasa, was established in 2008 via merger of Yrkeshogskolan Sydvast (Vocational Higher School of the Southwest) [also translated as Sydvast University of Applied Sciences] and Svenska Yrkeshogskolan (Swedish Vocational Higher School) [also translated as Swedish Polytechnic]. Yrkeshogskolan Novia is a network institution with campuses in seven coastal communities in Swedish-speaking southwestern and western Finland (Ekenas, Esbo, Helsingfors, Jakobstad, Nykarleby, Vasa, and Abo).


Universidad Galileo awards a Diploma de Tecnico Universitario en Informatica y Administracion and/or a Diplomado en Automatizacion de Oficinas to students enrolled in a licenciatura program in those fields who left the Universidad before completing all of the requirements for a licenciatura.


Daiyukai Ichinomiya College of Nursing, a private vocational school supervised by the government of Aichi Prefecture, was closed in March 2005.


From 1975-2007, there were 3 years of kindergarten, 5 years of primary school, 3 years of lower secondary school, and 3 years of upper secondary school. In 2007, lower secondary school was expanded to 4 years.

There are several types of tertiary educational qualifications:

Higher Diploma        3 years of study
Bachelor's degree     5 to 7 years of study
Master's degree        1½ years or more
Doctoral degree        3 years of study and research

In addition, there is a Specialist 1 Certificate (2 years or more), at the level of a Master's degree but academically lower, and a Specialist 2 Certificate (3 years or more), at the level of a doctoral degree but academically lower. Most Specialist Certificate programs are offered in medical fields.


Mahavithayalay Champasack (Champasack University) in Champasack was established in November 2002.

Mahavithagnalay Heang Xath Lao (National University of Laos) in Vientiane was established in June 1995 via merger of 10 institutions that were formerly part of Sisavangvong University (1958-1975) plus a Centre of Agriculture.

Mahavithayalay Souphanouvong (Souphanouvong University) in Luang Prabang City, Souphanouvong was established in November 2003.

There are also 5 teacher training colleges, and 85 private colleges authorized to offer Higher Diploma programs. Some private colleges are also authorized to offer bachelor's degree and master's degree programs.

Rattana Business Administration College, a private institution, is officially recognized as a degree-granting institution.


King Abdullah University of Science and Technology [KAUST], a public institution, opened on 23 September 2009. The first coeducational university, it offers only graduate-level programs.


Central Baptist Theological Seminary, Milwaukee Centre, established in Milwaukee, Wisconsin as a satellite of Central Baptist Theological Seminary (Shawnee, Kansas) in 2005, was accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada in 2009. The two institutions are not accredited by a regional accrediting association.

Tour University International (in Cypress, California), a division of Touro College, was sold to Summit Partners in 2007 and was renamed TUI University in Fall 2007.
