When determining the recognition status of secondary institutions in Puerto Rico, the school type will dictate where to search for the information. The following school types should be considered recognized: public schools, licensed private schools, and schools with US regional academic accreditation.
Public and private schools can be located in the Registro de Instituciones de Educación Básica (Registry of Basic Education Institutions), which can be accessed from the Consejo de Educación de Puerto Rico (CEPR) page of the Government of Puerto Rico website. For private schools, look for the Número de Registro, which is the license number of the institution.
The US Department of Education NCES school search can also be utilized to look up secondary schools in Puerto Rico. It is possible to search for both public and private schools, but the database may not be as comprehensive as the Registro de Instituciones de Educación Básica.
If the above avenues do not yield results, it is advised to search for US regional accreditation via the Middle States Association on Colleges and Schools Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools (MSA-CESS). Schools that appear in the MSA-CESS database have regional accreditation in the United States.
