The World Maritime University (WMU) located in Malmö, Sweden was officially recognized as a degree-granting institution by the Swedish Ministry of Education and Research earlier this year. WMU was established in 1983 by the International Maritime Organization, a specialized agency of the United Nations that sets global standards for the shipping industry. Prior to the decision by Swedish authorities, the recognition status of WMU was unclear due to the intergovernmental nature of the institution.
The Swedish parliament approved an amendment to higher education legislation in December 2021 which specified that WMU was eligible for degree-granting authority. The ministers of education and infrastructure then announced on 13 January 2022 that WMU is approved to award master and doctorate degrees in maritime studies.
